Why use a vibrator?

Of all the adult products on the market, the vibrator is one of the most popular. And the reason for this is simple: the massaging sensation of an electric vibrator on the clitoris and/or vagina is one of the easiest ways for many women to achieve orgasm. It feels good. It's that simple!

So we’re talking about masturbation?

Yep.  Masturbation. I love saying it, don’t you – ever since I realised how taboo the word still is (try getting an ad printed in the local newspaper with the word masturbation anywhere in the text!).  But thanks to the work of some pioneering sex educators, like Betty Dodson and Joanni Blank, not nearly so taboo as it once was.  More and more men and women understand it’s one of the most powerful ways to accept and enjoy their sexuality – and as well so relaxing!

But I've never had an orgasm?

Well that's another thing about the humble vibrator -it can be a powerful tool for the pre-orgasmic woman.  This from Betty Dodson:

"For the pre-orgasmic woman, the electric vibrator can be heaven sent. This strong, consistent and reliable form of stimulation can re-establish the connection of the nerve pathways from the clitoris to the brain. Women in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond can discover erotic feelings after a lifetime of sexual repression, sexual deprivation or lack of interest. Sexual Energy is healing."

But a vibrator is not all about masturbation?

No, they can be a great addition to partner play as well.

How to Choose a Vibrator?

There are definitely a few things to keep in mind when deciding which vibrator is right for you.  The most important is, believe it or not, the health and safety of the thing:

Many vibrators (usually the cheaper ones) are made from plastic that is unstable, releasing chemicals (out gassing) which can be harmful.  Silicone is by far the healthiest option for your vibrator:  not only is it more stable but it’s non-porous and able to be cleaned more thoroughly. If you are going to use a non-silicone vibrator it’s advisable to cover it with a condom when using it internally.

And then there is the size, colour and shape to consider, which basically comes down to personal preference.  Would you prefer a small one or a large one, a realistic penis shape vibrator or one like the Laya vibe - shaped to hug the clitoral area?  What colour? Would you like a vibrator that’s waterproof?

So if you don’t already own one, or maybe you haven’t even tried one, I can’t suggest strongly enough that you do so – they’re great!  If you do own one you suspect is made from less stable material consider upgrading to the healthier silicone option.  They cost a bit more, but they’ll last you a life-time, or at least a jolly long time!

Happy vibrating!
