Bob's World: The Life and Boys of AMG's Bob Mizer

Breaking News: Shop Girl wants to be a gay man ...

You know when you do that thing where you imagine some perfect fantasy life, such as:

I want to be Cliff Richard's summer holiday

or, and this is a personal favourite:

I wish I were a Mouseketeer?

One recent addition to my list of possibilities is this one:

I want to be a Bob's Boy (as in one of Bob Mizer's boys)

And why wouldn't I - Look how happy I am?

(I know, aside from the persecution and all that.) But check this out: for the most part we're talking pre AIDS, and, judging from the photo's, pre bad weather, thus no need for clothes.

For 41 years Bob Mizer published Physique Pictorial, America's first and most explicitly gay magazine and for much of the time found himself landlord to dozens of young models - Bob's Boys.

Until a few weeks ago I'd never heard of Bob Mizer, that was, until I read Taschen's latest,

Bob's World: The Life and Boys of AMG's Bob Mizer

If like me you'd never heard of Bob, here are a few Bob tit-bits:

1.) Bob is sometimes called the Hugh Hefner of gay publishing.

2.) Bob's models include no other than the respectable mayor of California, Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger.

3.) Bob was said to be eccentric because he preferred to spend his time taking photo's - which he did every day -to things like house cleaning. (which seems more wise than eccentric).

Full page photo's are interspersed with bios of the models as well as other information about Bob and life at Bob's place. Beautiful men, great photography and an interesting read - what more could you want!

Working at The Sexy Bookshop I see hundreds of sexy books, and every now and again one comes along and I think, shit.

Shit, because I'm going to have to add it to my personal collection, and really, I've got a enough now. And I'm kind of minimalist when it comes to having stuff.

Bob's World is now in the collection.

Being amongst all these books you see stuff you might not have thought was your thing. Like, what's a girl like me doing collecting gay art photo books?

And does it matter?

While we're having this heart to heart about who likes what, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have emailed and called to tell me what 'nice pins' I have.

Even though they weren't 'my pins' the thought is very much appreciated, and I thank you.

Happy Reading and kind loving,

Shop Girl - (AKA 'The Girl With The Pins' (from a piece a few weeks back, in case you missed it)).
